Diffusing Power

An ideal learning classroom environment is a place where every student feels comfortable and valued for whom they are (Wessler, 2003.) When students are trying to gain their own power in the classroom, this is probably because they think others don’t see them as who they really are. It will be helpful to deal with this problem by creating a more peaceful and caring environment, where every students has what they deserve.

I’m not saying that it is bad if the student wants to gain power. As we grow up, we do slowly gain power and control over ourselves. But the process of gaining control over ourselves and certain situations need to be learned. I agree with what Lisa said, we as teachers are supposed to help students understand how to be more independent in solving problems and how to learn from these experiences. This will eventually empower the students.

Power is something that everyone wants, no matter children or adults. Power makes one feels important and powerful. It can be used well and bring in good results, however, if the power is not used properly, bad things could happen. As teachers, we are to teach our students how to cooperate with the society slowly by teaching them how to work with the classmates. Therefore, it is extremely important for us to teach them how to use their power and the appropriate time to use it. A student wanting power in the classroom does not necessarily mean that s/he is misbehaving, this student is just trying to grow up and gain more control over situations s/he is in.
