Response to Mark
Mark...when I read your dialogue, I couldn't help but think of a saying that I learned from another teacher..."Needs before wants". We always need to fulfill our needs before our wants - this goes for our students as well as ourselves. Kind of links into your concept of "fairness" given the peoples needs and wants are different...

It's another important distinction to help kids understand why 'equal treatment' does not mean 'identical treatment'.
