Discipline or punishment

I believe discipline is different from punishment because it teaches students to learn from their mistakes rather than making them suffer for them. Punishment focuses on the teacher being responsible for controlling a student's behavior, rather than the student controlling his/her own behavior, which is the focus of discipline.       

Discipline encourages the students to control themselves from within, whereas with punishment, the control depends on outside forces. This outside control usually involves some sort of pain or discomfort. What do you think this does student’s self-esteem .But when we discipline the student  they learn independence and to take responsibility for their actions and to make their own choices based on mutually accepted rules. Punishment has the opposite effect, the student is encouraged to rebel and be dishonest and dependent on you to make decisions on their behalf.

Punishment usually involves depriving student of privileges or the application of pain in some form or other. The result of this is that the student starts to fear making mistakes and they learn that using violence is an acceptable way of solving problems. With discipline we encourage the student to learn from their mistakes and focus on the lesson to be learned from the situation. It also teaches constructive and respectful ways to solve problems.

When we punish we focus on the student  and how he /she disappointed us,  but when we use discipline we focus on the behavior rather than the student.
