"discipline or punishment?"

One of the ways that helps teachers to have a successful class management is to exert discipline and make students know about the rules in the beginning of the course. A lack of discipline permits students with misbehavior to show off and to cause disturbance in the classroom. Once the discipline is imposed, the teacher rarely needs to punish someone for his/her misbehavior in the classroom. Students will be able to control their own behavior instead of being controlled (by the teacher). Also, the consequences of discipline teaches students to feel (themselves) responsible of their behavior (/ misbehavior). However, it’s very important to clearly define the frame of the discipline and its consequences to students. This way, there will be no alibi for any form of misbehavior from students. I believe that discipline will be respected if it solicits reasonable requests.
